A PPC (pay per click) campaign can be an effective way of getting the word out there about your type of enterprise. But be warned, those who don’t look before they leap can end up making costly mistakes. Attention to detail and the formulation of a plan will result in the most effective PPC campaign for you. So you want to know some of the secrets of other great PPC champions? Please read on.

Step one is picking the right keywords. Most people think it’s best to choose an extremely common keyword. This couldn’t be further from the truth - a common keyword may get you a lot of clicks, but it’s hard to get, requiring a higher bid. On top of that, people clicking on a more general keyword are less likely to buy, since they’re probably just starting their search. The best way to get a wide, appropriate audience for the lowest cost is to use a targeted keyword phrase, also referred to as a long tail keyword.

Experiment with a few, more specific phrases by searching Google or another popular engine to find the one that gives you good results for your product. You can also use some of the available tools for finding good permutations of keywords, and which can offer hundreds of viable phrases for your business. Test these keywords to find the ones that are most effective.

Then, when you’re confident you have the right keyword combination, it’s time to start designing the advertisement. Don’t skimp on time here, even the best keywords can’t work in a poorly designed ad. What you need here is to compel the reader and draw them towards the headline, then seal the deal with copy that empowers the reader to click and find out more. Make sure your ad is accurate, bad descriptions will always lead to lost sales.

Good ad copy should include a real sense of urgency about the product. Also, don’t forget the main benefits of the goods or services you offer. Empower the customer to realize the benefits they can obtain by clicking on your ad right now! Promotions and discounts in the third line often serve this purpose.

Trying to get the highest ranking on a search page is where you need to really look at negatives and positives. It’s true that many people click on that first-ranked ad. That could mean more sales for you, but it could also mean empty clicks, as visitors realize they were looking for something else. Don’t waste resources by putting all of your eggs in the one basket here. Focus on targeted advertising aimed directly at your audience.

Pay attention to the competition, too. Adjust your keywords and ad copy according to what appears to be working for them, although direct copying should be avoided. Check the results of each keyword set and the ads associated with it to find out which ones are working, and which aren’t.

When it comes to PPC advertising there are no guarantees. Reaching the right customer for your campaign is the key to your success. With your insights, knowledge and suitable changes, your marketing campaign will be right on track. And, you will find you are reaching out to the right customer and making more sales.
